Major transportation routes have crossed the Richmond and Wayne County, Indiana area since it was settled in 1806. It is bisected east/west by the National Road (U.S. 40) and Interstate 70, north/south by U.S. 27, and crossed by U.S. 35. It is served by a rail and has an interesting canal history.
