Rebecca (b. near Dayton, Ohio
Dec-13-
1819) d. Mar-14-1914 - 95y-3m-1d. (dau. of George and Elizabeth (
) Pierce.
The following
notes are from a news excerpt concerning her which appeared in
the, December 25, 1905, Sun Telegram. "She received her early
education in the State of Ohio, and her reminiscence of the first
school she attended is quite amusing. She says the teacher was an
old bachelor, who was not overburdened with 'intellectual gifts',
and the 'school house' was an old two-story log house, and the
upper story was used for the storage of fodder. On the third day
of school, in the afternoon, a big rat, tumbled down out of the
mow right in the midst of the scholars where were not slow to size
up the situation, and all gave chase after Mr. Rat, which ended
school for the day. (Her parents came to this state when) Rebecca
was a mere child, but did not remain long on account of the wolves
and Indians. The whole time no groceries could be obtained by the
settlers around Economy nearer than Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce
returned to the Buckeye State and remained for fourteen years
before they returned to Indiana. George Pierce took up his trade
as a miller when he came back to Wayne County. There were thirteen
children in the Pierce family." (Rebecca was the eldest.)
EARLY HARDSHIPS
"In 1835,
at the age of fifteen, Rebecca was united in marriage to Temple
Edwards. The young couple began housekeeping with only a violin,
one side of meat and a bag of clothes. Their first furniture was
all made by Mr. Edwards, who was a cabinet maker and carpenter by
trade. The beds were built in the sides of the wall. The table
ware was made of pewter. The meat was hung on the rafters in the
cabin. Mrs. Edwards spun the wool and made all the clothing for
the family. She went to the field, gathered the flax, and prepared
it for
spinning. Despite the small beginning, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards
accumulated enough in later years to amply reward them for their
early hardships."
(The second
stone south of the above one also bears the name of Temple Edwards
with identical data.)
