Earlham Pursuing National Credential for Excellence in Community Engagement

Earlham College is pursuing a national credential to signal the effectiveness of its commitment to community engagement with its neighbors in Richmond, nationally and globally.
The College will apply for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Classification for Community Engagement in 2019. The application process involves data collection and documentation of important aspects of institutional mission, identity and commitments.
"Earlham has a long history of living out our mission through community service and involvement, but the Carnegie Foundation provides us with an opportunity for external validation that our contributions are truly making a difference," Earlham President Alan Price says. "It is time to rededicate ourselves to this noble ideal while also reflecting on our curriculum, co-curriculum, infrastructure, community partnerships, and culture."
Price has appointed a 14-member committee to carry out this work and submit the application on behalf of the College. Applications are due in April 2019 with recipients being announced in January 2020.
Earlham's committee will, among other things:
- Collect data and documentation of Earlham's mission, identity, commitments and practices that provide evidence of the College's institutional involvement with community engagement;
- Put in place systems for ongoing data collection and documentation of community engagement activities;
- Identify specific areas for quality improvement related to community engagement; and Identify specific areas for improvement related to the student experience of community engagement.
- Earlham is recognized as one of the nation's top institutions for its commitment to the social good.
Earlham's Bonner Scholars Program, one of 21 college programs supported by an endowment from the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., awards scholarships to 15 students annually who have a passion for serving others. Charles Davis '18, a Bonner Scholar who served the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County for the last three years, was named that organization's Volunteer of the Year for 2018.
Service and community-based research are integrated into a growing number of courses as part of the College's EPIC program as well as the EPIC Advantage, the offer of a funded internship, project or research experience for every student. As part of a growing partnership with Richmond's Department of Parks and Recreation during the last two academic years, seniors studying topics related to environmental sustainability have pursued community improvement projects that have resulted in funding for new playgrounds and revitalized overlooked public spaces.
United Way President Amber Willeford Taking New Job in Ohio; Interim President Announced

United Way of Whitewater Valley President Amber Willeford has accepted a new position at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She will remain with the United Way until the end of June.
Willeford has been with the United Way since March 2014 when she was hired as Director of Resource Development. She became President in September 2015 and established a foundation for the organization's H.U.G. Initiative (Hand Up Guidance), which is focusing efforts around those in the Whitewater Valley who are walking a financial tightrope.
"The Board of Directors certainly has mixed emotions with the news of Amber leaving," said United Way Board Chairman Aman Bakshi. "While we are excited for her opportunity for growth, her dedication and efforts to creating lasting change in our community has not gone unnoticed. We wish her the best on her new adventure."
A search for a new president is underway. Paul Stanley, a former United Way Board Member, has been appointed Interim President until the most qualified candidate is identified.
The United Way Board of Directors is committed to ensuring leadership stability and continuity of the United Way of Whitewater Valley as well as to our community," Bakshi said. "We are confident in the skills of Paul Stanley to lead us during this time of transition."

Event to raise funds to help seniors and people with disabilities remain independent in East Central Indiana
LifeStream Services invites the public to attend the Inaugural LifeStream Golf Outing on Thursday, June 28 at the Elks Lodge & Country Club in Richmond. Join LifeStream for a day of golfing and making a difference in the lives of older adults in the community. The LifeStream Golf Outing will include a variety of activities including Beat the Pro, Putting Contest, a $10,000 Hole-In-One, and other chances to win cash prizes.
The event will begin with registration at 11am, followed by lunch at noon, and shot gun start at 1pm. Registration as an individual or a team is open through Monday, June 25. The golfing fee is $75 for an individual or $280 for a foursome. Wayne County Senior Farmers' Market Vouchers to be Distributed

Vouchers for the Wayne County Senior Farmers' Market will be available through LifeStream Services during a special sign-up session on Wednesday, June 27 from 11am to 7pm, or until supplies last, at the Wayne County 4H Fair located at 861 Salisbury Rd., Richmond, IN 47374. Vouchers are provided by the state at limited quantities, so please plan to arrive early.
Wayne County residents over the age of 60 can redeem vouchers for fresh produce at the Richmond Farmers' Market located at 47 N. 6th St., Richmond on Saturday from 8am to 12pm or Tuesday from 4pm to 7pm.
The vouchers are worth $20 and can be used through October 20. Eligible items include beans, peppers, tomatoes, apples, and other fresh fruits and vegetables.
To be eligible to receive vouchers (Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program checks), the recipient must be at least 60 years of age or older, or a qualified person with disabilities. A picture ID with date of birth will be required to verify age. Making Richmond Healthier, More Active Is Workshop's Focus

Health by Design and the Indiana State Department of Health will present a workshop on June 26th, designed to help Richmond become a healthier and more active community for all ages and abilities.
The daylong workshop will bring together city staff, community stakeholders and civic leaders to learn about the benefits of designing for active living and strategies for success. The group will conduct an informal walk audit to assess the accessibility and condition of sidewalks and street crossings, and prioritize built environment strategies to encourage active living in Richmond.
"The purpose of the workshop is to help residents of Richmond see that strong communities are built for all ages and abilities, and to begin planning and designing an environment that will make it easier for residents to be active in their daily lives," said Kim Irwin, executive director of Health by Design. Health by Design is a coalition that works to ensure that communities throughout Indiana have neighborhoods, public spaces and transportation infrastructure that promote physical activity and healthy living.
"If someone can easily walk to the grocery store or bike to work, they're more likely to do so on a regular basis, which benefits them and the community," Irwin added. "We also encourage people to look at the built environment from the standpoint of whether someone using a wheelchair or pushing a stroller can easily move from one destination to another."
Presenters will include staff from Health by Design and the Indiana State Department of Health.

If you are 50 years old or older, please join us as new members are always welcome. Senior Adult Ministry is an active group of seniors open to all regardless of religious affiliation. The group meets monthly; future meetings will include a summer picnic, musical programs and a presentation about butterflies.

Reid Health Community Benefit Awards More than $155,000 in Grants

5-year total reaches nearly $176 million for area programs
The Reid Health Community Benefit program recently awarded $155,075 in grants to programs designed to improve mental health and fight substance abuse in the first grant cycle of 2018.
Grants, along with other specific outreach and requirements to meet the system's not-for-profit status, have put almost $176 million back into the community in the last five years. A committee of Reid Health's governing board reviews grant requests. The grants are awarded as part of the health system's efforts as a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization.

Community benefit is the basis of the tax-exempt status of not-for-profit hospitals. Community benefit is defined as programs or activities that improve access to health services, enhance public health, advance increased general knowledge, and/or relieve the burden of government to improve health. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act added new requirements for tax-exempt hospitals in the areas of community health needs assessment (CHNA), implementation strategy, billing and collections and reporting. In 2014 the IRS issued final rules implementing these requirements. The goals of these provisions are to ensure that tax-exempt hospitals are meeting the health needs of their communities and to ensure greater transparency and accountability.
In addition to grants, the Reid Health Community Benefit sponsors various programs focused on community health. In the area of access to care, Reid Health Community Benefit initiated a dental clinic focused on serving those with little or no dental coverage. Community benefit funds support Claim Aid to assist individuals in applying for health insurance plans or Reid's financial assistance when necessary. Access to care also includes the shortfall of the cost of care rendered to those who have Medicaid coverage. Reid has continued to support community health clinics, such as Siloam Clinic and Hope Center with processing of lab services and providing supplies necessary for operations.
To address substance abuse and mental health needs, Reid has provided Narcan kits and training to first responders to prevent death from opioid overdose, containers to dispose of needles for police departments, and participated in efforts to reduce the incidence of babies being born addicted to drugs. Along with many other community agencies' support, Reid has been involved in the efforts of the community group focused on the "Heroin is Here" initiative designed to increase awareness of drug abuse and its devastating effects.
Reid has supported programs addressing physical activity, nutrition and weight such as athletic training services to community schools, community screenings, cooking classes, health fairs, support groups, Reid Healthier Wellness club and provided support for many health education events.

I-70 Lane Restriction for Patching

NDOT is scheduled to close the right lane on I-70 eastbound from mile marker 148 to 150 to complete pavement patching.
Exit 149A and the on ramp from US 35 north will remain open. Exit 149B and the on ramp from US 35 south will close.
The closure is anticipated for Friday, June 15 at 9 p.m. to Monday, June 18 at 6 a.m.

Main Street Closure for Water Main Work

INDOT contractor Gradex will close Main Street east of Eighth Street to complete water main work. The west side of the intersection will be unrestricted during work.
The closure will take place on or around Monday, June 18 and will reopen Main Street on Wednesday, June 20, weather permitting.

Earlham Pursuing National Credential for Excellence in Community Engagement

Earlham College is pursuing a national credential to signal the effectiveness of its commitment to community engagement with its neighbors in Richmond, nationally and globally.
The College will apply for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Classification for Community Engagement in 2019. The application process involves data collection and documentation of important aspects of institutional mission, identity and commitments.
"Earlham has a long history of living out our mission through community service and involvement, but the Carnegie Foundation provides us with an opportunity for external validation that our contributions are truly making a difference," Earlham President Alan Price says. "It is time to rededicate ourselves to this noble ideal while also reflecting on our curriculum, co-curriculum, infrastructure, community partnerships, and culture."
Price has appointed a 14-member committee to carry out this work and submit the application on behalf of the College. Applications are due in April 2019 with recipients being announced in January 2020.
Earlham's committee will, among other things:
- Collect data and documentation of Earlham's mission, identity, commitments and practices that provide evidence of the College's institutional involvement with community engagement;
- Put in place systems for ongoing data collection and documentation of community engagement activities;
- Identify specific areas for quality improvement related to community engagement; and Identify specific areas for improvement related to the student experience of community engagement.
- Earlham is recognized as one of the nation's top institutions for its commitment to the social good.
Earlham's Bonner Scholars Program, one of 21 college programs supported by an endowment from the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., awards scholarships to 15 students annually who have a passion for serving others. Charles Davis '18, a Bonner Scholar who served the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County for the last three years, was named that organization's Volunteer of the Year for 2018.
Service and community-based research are integrated into a growing number of courses as part of the College's EPIC program as well as the EPIC Advantage, the offer of a funded internship, project or research experience for every student. As part of a growing partnership with Richmond's Department of Parks and Recreation during the last two academic years, seniors studying topics related to environmental sustainability have pursued community improvement projects that have resulted in funding for new playgrounds and revitalized overlooked public spaces.
