00 November 21 - NEWS RELEASE
Ivy Tech State College announced today that the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) is recommending that the State Legislature appropriate $17.8 million for the Ivy Tech Richmond capital project, approximately $7 million less than the $24.8 million total requested.
A total of $24.8 million is needed to construct a stand-alone building and provide expansion and renovation of the college's existing Richmond Campus building. The $17.8 million recommended by the CHE, if approved, would provide for the proposed stand-alone structure but not the needed expansion and renovation of the college's current facility.
Ivy Tech Chancellor James
Steck said, "I remain cautiously optimistic that our area legislators and
the community can convince the 2001 Indiana General Assembly that the full $24.8
million is needed this biennium to meet the needs of Richmond and the
surrounding communities." Steck added, "There is a critical need to
consolidate our programs to the two co-located facilities on the Richmond
Campus. Several of our technology programs are slated for the expanded space in
our existing facility. If we do not receive full funding for the project, we
will be faced with the most unwelcome prospect of continuing the operation of
those programs in some of our most inadequate facilities scattered throughout
Richmond."
The addition and renovation to the college's existing Richmond Campus building
will create a state-of-the-art technology center that will house numerous
technology programs and laboratories in addition to the college's business and
industry training operations.
